Abstract

The research on new sets of sequences to be used asspreading codes in multiple user communications is still an activearea, despite the great amount of literature available since manyyears on this topic. In fact, new paradigms like dense anddecentralized wireless networks, where there is no centralcontroller to assign the resources to the nodes, are revamping theinterest on large sets of sequences providing adequate correlationproperties to support a big number of nodes, in potentially hostilechannels. This paper focuses on the Zero Correlation Zone (ZCZ)property exhibited by a family of non-linear binary sequencesfeaturing a great cardinality of their set and good securityrelatedfeatures, and provides evidence of their suitability tomultiuser communications, in channels affected by multipath.

Mahdiyar Sarayloo was born in Mashhad, Iran in 1986. He completed his MSc at the University of Southampton in the UK, graduating with merit.  His MSc dissertation, in the area of System_On_Chip, was titled Design of a Novel Phased Drive Ultrasonic Signal Generator. In 2009, he received his Bachelor in Electronic Engineering,  graduating with Distinction from Institute of Sadjad Higher Education in Mashhad, Iran, where he mainly focused on the analogue. Whilst pursuing his bachelor’s degree he was Teaching Assistant (T.A)  for Analogue and Mathematics courses.  His bachelor’s thesis is investigated  on “Design of A CMOS OpAmp (with 0.18mu technology) and its Optimization with PSO Algorithm”. Currently, his research focuses on the various types of Pseudo Noise (PN) sequences, specifically De Bruijn family and their optimization on security applications with regards to randomness properties.

Ennio Gambi was born in Loreto (Ancona, Italy) in 1961. He received the Electronic Engineering graduate diploma at the Università Politecnica delle Marche in 1986 and the Microwave Engineering master degree in 1989. From 1984 to 1992 he worked with the Azienda di Stato per i Servizi Telefonici, while during 1988 he covered the role of Avionic Engineer as an Official of the Italian Military Air Force. Since 1992 he joined the Università Politecnica delle Marche in Ancona, where he is, currently, an Associate Professor. At present his main research interests are in spread spectrum systems, both for communication and radar purposes. In particular, his research is dedicated to the selection of suitable sets of expansion sequences, able to increase the system performance. At the same time, on the basis of a long time interest on source coding, he is working on the evolution of this technique in the field of Ambient Assisted Living, with the aim to propose an integrated solution where the fusion of data provided by different sensor networks allows to offer the desired level of home assistance for disabled or elderly people. He is coauthor of several international papers. Since the Academic Year 1995/96, he is the lecturer for the courses of Telecommunication Systems of the Università Politecnica delle Marche. He is a founding member of ArieLAB, an Italian SME, spinoff of the Università Politecnica delle Marche, principally devoted to the development of innovative technologies. In particular, ArieLAB products are in the field of home automation solutions for disabled people and new systems for digital television.

Susanna Spinsante was born in Osimo (Italy) in 1976. She received her Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications in 2005, from the Polytechnic University of Marche (ITALY), and her Laurea (Graduate Diploma) Degree in Electronic Engineering in 2002, from the same University. Since December 2005, she has been a PostDoc in Telecommunications, at the same University, where now she is Assistant Professor in Telecommunications. During her Ph.D. course, she spent a semester at the Department of Informatics of the University of Bergen (NORWAY), where she awarded a fellowship for a research activity on iterative coding issues for asymmetric channels. Since 2007 she has been adjunct professor at the Engineering Faculty of the Polytechnic University of Marche. At present, Susanna is involved in studying the issues of integrating radio communication devices in networks dedicated to home automation, by investigating the problems related to data traffic management and communication reliability. She works on radio communication systems exploiting spread spectrum techniques, for indoor and outdoor communications (Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth, CDMA systems for multiple access), and radar applications (vehicular anti-collision systems). She is IEEE Senior Member, member of AitAAL (Italian Association for Ambient Assisted Living) since February 2010. In December 2004 she was one of the charter members of ArieLAB, a technological start up active in the field of telecommunication services design and consultancy. She is involved in several applied research projects on AAL and home building automation, supported by regional and national funds. From 2010 to 2013 she has been the CEO of ArieLAB Srl. In September 2012 she was co-founder of the academic spinoff DowSee Srl.
